Muscle Activation Technique (MAT)™

Restoring proper muscle function to improve movement and reduce pain

Muscle Activation Technique (MAT)

Muscle Activation Technique® (MAT) was developed over the past 15 years by Greg Roskopf, a biomechanics consultant who has worked with elite professional athletes, including the Denver Broncos.

MAT is both a system and a clinical thought process built on a key principle:

muscle tightness is often a symptom of underlying muscle weakness and inhibition — not the primary problem itself.

This approach differs fundamentally from many traditional treatment methods in physical medicine, which focus on reducing tightness through stretching, massage, or tissue “release,” under the assumption that tightness is the root cause of pain or dysfunction.

From the MAT perspective, muscles often become tight as a protective response to weakness or poor neurological activation. When certain muscles lose their ability to contract efficiently, the body compensates by overworking other muscles. Over time, this can lead to chronic strain, faulty movement patterns, and persistent pain.

Muscles may become inhibited due to factors such as:

  • Injury or trauma
  • Repetitive overuse
  • Physical or emotional stress
  • Prolonged poor posture or movement habits

As these compensations accumulate, complex muscular imbalances can develop, limiting performance and increasing injury risk.

How MAT Is Used in Your Care

MAT is often used as a foundational step in faster and more effective recovery from musculoskeletal injuries, sports injuries, trauma, and surgery. By restoring proper muscle function and improving joint stability and movement efficiency, MAT helps reduce unnecessary strain on the body, which may contribute to a reduction in pain.

By optimizing how the body moves and addressing underlying muscle imbalances, MAT can also play an important role in injury prevention, helping lower the risk of future breakdown or re-injury.

Once muscle balance and joint control have been improved, MAT is commonly used prior to strengthening or movement training, helping ensure the right muscles are supporting joints appropriately before higher-level activity is introduced.
